Hypnotherapy

“The afflictions suffered by the body, the soul sees quite well with the eyes shut.”

~ Hippocrates (460 - 370BC) ~

What is Hypnosis?

The earliest written records on hypnosis can be found in the Ebers Papyrus; an ancient Egyptian medical text dating around 1550BC. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness which involves deep focused attention, bringing about a level of awareness different from the ordinary conscious state.  It is a completely natural state of deep relaxation where you remain awake and aware, but switched off to outside influences.  In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed.

Being in the state of hypnosis enables you to:

  • Achieve an enhanced state of awareness

  • Bypass conscious critical analysis - of yourself and any issues you may be experiencing

  • Create a space for transformation

Opening the door to countless possibilities for healing, self-exploration and change.

What is the difference between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind?
Think of your mind as an iceberg.

The tip of the iceberg is your

CONSCIOUS MIND - which makes up 10%

Short Term Memory
Thinking and Planning

Critical / Analytical / Logical / Rational

Beneath the surface - the deeper part - is your

SUB-CONSCIOUS MIND - which makes up 90%

Involuntary Bodily Functions

(Heartbeat, breathing, blinking, twitching etc)

Habits, Patterns, Addictions

Developmental Stages

Emotions & Feelings

Spiritual Connection

Long Term Memory

Fears & Phobias

Creativity

Intuition

Now think of a computer

A computer has many functions but in order for it to function it needs a hard drive.  The hard drive knows and runs all the software and programmes. Without a hard drive a computer can't function.  Sometimes viruses get in and install rogue applications that cause the computer to malfunction.

Subconscious mind
Now think of your self as a computer

Your subconscious mind is your hard drive.  It knows and runs all your programmes. Those that are running in the background that you are not consciously aware of, that are having a profound effect on who you are.

Everything we have ever seen, heard, thought, touched, felt, smelled and experienced is stored in our subconscious.  Things that have been seen, heard, thought, touched, felt, smelled and experienced negatively are likened to the rogue applications – they are our irrational fears, phobias, suppressed emotions, negative thoughts, feelings, actions, reactions, habits, patterns of behaviour etc.

So What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in a therapeutic context.  Through positive suggestions, positive affirmations and speaking directly with your subconscious mind, hypnotherapy simply 're-programmes' your 'hard-drive' by taking you on your own personal journey into a profound state of relaxation, to access and work directly with your subconscious - the background programmes, to clear away those rogue applications and create a space for transformation.

In today's society hypnotherapy has become recognised as one of the most gentle, yet powerful and successful approaches to achieving positive, long lasting and healthy changes.

How do you get into the hypnotic state?

When we are awake and active our brainwave frequency is at BETA, the awake and active state.

When we are calm and relaxed - reading  a book, watching tv etc, our brainwave frequency is at ALPHA, the awake but relaxed state.

When we meditate or are day-dreaming, zoned out, in a 'trance', miles away in our own little world where we are aware that there is something going on around us but our attention is focused within our own mind, our brainwave frequency is at THETA.  You are awake but in an altered state of consciousness.

The hypnotic state is simply the Theta state.  When you start a hypnotherapy session your brainwave frequency is at Beta.  A guided relaxation slowly brings you into the Alpha state, then a gentle deepener brings you into the Theta state.

Whilst in the hypnotic state do you relinquish control?

No.  You do not go 'unconscious' or into an oblivious state where anything could be said or done unbeknown to you.  You cannot be 'made' to reveal any information you do not wish to reveal, do anything against your will, or do or say anything that would interfere with or intrude upon your values or your moral code.  Contrary to what you may have seen or heard with regards to stage hypnosis (the theatricals of hypnosis), no one else can 'control' your mind, you remain completely in control and aware of what is happening at all times.  The only changes that will happen are changes that you are ready to make and want to happen.

Hypnotherapy is not about mind control, it is about empowerment.
